Thursday’s Syrian Supper Club was such a huge success, with the most delicious food from Chef Danny Jack and Majeda from The Syrian Sunflower Kitchen – we’re still dreaming of the muhammara!!! 🍊🍆🫑🌶
We are absolutely delighted to announce that the evening raised over £3,000 for our Emergency Earthquake Appeal.
Thank you so much to everyone who came along and supported Hands Up’s fundraising, and particular thanks to all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly on bringing the night to life. The night was a true show of people’s generosity, with the wonderful volunteers from the The Good Gym and other amazing individuals who helped out, as well as donating items for the raffle and auction.
Having worked with our Syrian partners in this part of the world for nearly a decade, we know how devastating this earthquake is for what was already a catastrophic humanitarian situation. Even before this disaster, 14.6 million people were in need of humanitarian aid. Now that number will increase significantly. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but with your help and generosity we will be there to enable our partners to deliver aid beyond the immediate aftermath.
So far, under the Earthquake Appeal, we have committed £220k to three of our long-term partners, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), Physicians Across Continents (PAC) and SAWA for Development & Aid (SAWA). With their expertise and experience, we are working to ensure life-saving equipment and services can get to where they are desperately needed across affected areas in the north-west and north-east of Syria, as well as in Turkey. Under SAMS and PAC, funds are being used for medical equipment for post-traumatic critical care (e.g. dialysis kits), baby milk for orphans and mothers who are unable to breastfeed, lab consumables (e.g. syringes), orthopaedic consumables (e.g. surgeons’ drills), salaries for medical staff, as well as the running of a Primary Health Clinic in Tel Abyad, Syria. With SAWA, the programme will provide cash grants to 280 families so they can meet urgent needs, such as hospital bills, medication, and rent for temporary homes.
